Dear Friends

I founded Peace One Day in 1999 to document my efforts to create an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date. In 2001, POD achieved its primary objective. United Nations General Assembly resolution (A/Res/55/282) was unanimously adopted by UN member states, formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace, fixed in the global calendar on 21 September - Peace Day.

With the Day in place, POD’s main aim is to raise awareness of Peace Day 21 September. POD is a non-profit organisation, impartial and independent of any government, political persuasion, corporation or religious creed.

In 2007 according to the UN, over 100 million people were active on Peace Day, in 192 countries. There were life-saving initiatives in 14 countries and over 80 activities in Afghanistan alone where 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio.

I hope you’ll make your own commitment for Peace Day and log it on this website. Please visit our new My Take on Peace page and submit a short film telling us what peace means to you.

With thanks and best wishes.

In Peace

Join Cascadia for Green Skyline Tours

On September 25th, 26th and 28th, the Cascadia Region Green Building Council (Cascadia) will launch its second annual tour of green buildings. Through tours of almost forty buildings, Green Skyline will showcase some of the most innovative green buildings throughout British Columbia, demonstrating to the industry and the public what smart design, construction and operations look like. Both residential and commercial tours will be held in Vancouver (with tours in West and North Vancouver as well as at UBC); in the Okanagan (with tours planned in Kelowna, Naramata, Okanagan Falls, Oliver, and Penticton); Vancouver Island (including tours in Saanich and the Highlands). Check the calendar at www.cascadiagbc.org for more information.

Registrants can start at whichever building they want to and make their own way to tour the buildings in whichever sequence they please (there are some local guided tours but check the website for details). To see Vancouver Sun’s coverage, see www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/westcoasthomes/story.html?id=7de67b55-207f-45b9-87c0-16965c01c858 * Each tour is 1 AIBC Learning Unit. www.burningman.com This festival is something beyond words can describe, it’s something one must experience for themselves. It was the best week of my life, and it really did change my life. I was expanded creatively, intellectually, spiritually, and socially by ideas, people, sights, sound, and survived a sand storm, in addition to having a mad love affair.

Top 40 under 40 Award from Business in Vancouver

August 21st, 2008

Business in Vancouver Media Group is again accepting nominations for our Annual Business in Vancouver Forty Under 40 Awards, which celebrates 40 outstanding business people under the age of 40 from the profit and not-for-profit sectors.

Are you an over achiever? Do you know someone who is? If you are (or know someone who is) successful in business and under 40 (39 as of December 31), nominations are being accepted until SEPTEMBER 19, 2008.

The 40 Under 40 Award has been a significant milestone in the careers of the previous winners. In addition to meeting other young, successful business people in the province, 40 Under 40 winners will be profiled in the New Year’s issue of Business in Vancouver newspaper. For a list of previous winners, visit our website at WWW.BIV.COM.

Visit our website for more information or to submit a nomination online (click on “40 Under 40″ and follow the links to the online nomination form).

Please note that while previous winners are not eligible to win again, previous nominees are welcome to submit a new application for consideration, given nominees are under the age of 40 as of December 31. Nominees may also self-nominate themselves. All nominees are recommended to include a CV and reference letters or a list of references in their application.

If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call at 604-608-5114 or send me an email at RChu@biv.com.
